Music Educator As a music educator, Duane believes in creating a “special, safe, and fun environment” where students feel free to explore themselves through the study of violin and music. A specialist in early childhood education, his enjoys beginning students around the age of 3. However, he believes that you are “never too old to learn twinkle.” Indeed his oldest beginning violin student was 85 years old when he began lessons.

Duane’s teaching draws heavily from the ideas of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, Paul Rolland, Ivan Galamian, and Syzmon Goldberg. While he takes great care in guiding his students through their studies, his ultimate goal is to teach his students to “become their own best teacher”. A champion of Alternative Styles of Violin Performance, Duane is currently developing his own jazz improvisation method for beginning violinists.

Earning Bachelors degrees in Music and Psychology from Northwestern University and a Masters degree from Yale University, Duane has also studied violin pedagogy with Stacia Spencer, Lisa Hershmugle, Stevie Svanden, Betty Haig, and Allen Lieb. He has studied conducting with Marvin Rabin and William Jones. While living on the East Coast, he helped create and direct Suzuki Violin Programs in Public Schools for the Tabor Community Arts Center as well as Wintergreen Magnet School in CT. Previously on faculty at the Bethwood Suzuki School in CT, Duane currently teaches at Punahou Music School and the Iolani school as well has his own private studio in Honolulu and on Maui.

A leader in the teaching community, Duane has served on the board of directors of the Suzuki Association of Hawaii, and Suzuki Talent Education of Hawaii. He has also served as President of the American String Teachers Association, Hawaii Chapter.
